Day Two: Hands

Sometimes we sense the presence of God inside our spirit, in a way we cannot articulate.

Other times, God’s presence comes to us through our physical senses. We feel God in the folds of leathery palms. We see God in the face of a person who gives us worth by their look. We hear God in the kind words of a stuttering voice. We smell God in the rain that launders the earth. We taste God in the spices of a meal made for us.

Sometimes, God reaches out to us invisibly; other times, He uses physical means like hands.

Have you ever wondered at God’s methods? He has boundless power, no limitations in healing, a voice loud enough for all to hear. Yet He chooses people to demonstrate His power, to speak His words, to touch the broken. Something about our connecting with one another must please Him. Something about our participation in the story of redemption must be His pleasure. He chooses to use the patterns of nature and the things we touch, see, taste, smell, hear. He uses simple things for miracles.

Someone said on Day Two, “God is moving in Flint.” Through what means is He moving? Through leathery palms, compassionate faces, stuttering voices, cleansing precipitation, meals made by kind people.

We got word that a man we prayed for earlier told his friend, “God talked to me today.” He had heard the encouragement of God in our voices.

We encountered many people with health problems on Day Two, and we spoke words of healing as we touched them with our hands.

Others were listened to for the first time, asked if they were okay, given a meal, noticed, hugged.

Some people in Flint are just longing for someone to speak a good word to them. Some are just longing for a touch. The news reporter that followed us on Day Two (see the news reports below) said she was skeptical of the churches in the area, but to see the physical presence of people on the streets is what caught her. She sensed something different about this “church” movement because the “church people” are actually present, actually touching, talking to, and being with the broken in the community.

It’s what Jesus did.

“When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’

  Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’ Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.”

We don’t have to do much. The power is God’s; the hands are ours. With a touch, people see God in us, somewhere past ourselves. They reach out, like the more than nine people on Day Two who found the love and forgiveness of Jesus, and they accepted it. They see faith happening in the real world, and they think maybe God does care about this city.

Flint is changing. And we are expecting miracles. And God, almighty and boundless as He is, uses hands for tools.

Another man confessed Christ on Day Two, and found hope. He was moved to trust God and he told us the reason: “I saw the power of God in your faces.”
