The Evans Family sure has owned the Spelling Bee Championship! It is so wonderful to report GOOD NEWS on our Youth! Helen Evans has this report from Washington D.C. as her daughter, Hannah, prepares for the Spelling Bee………

Hi everyone,

We can hardly believe that we’re back at the National Spelling Bee again, this time with Hannah as the NM champion! We arrived on Saturday, went over to some D.C. friends’ house for brunch on Sunday and then to the barbeque yesterday afternoon. Before the picnic yesterday, Hannah was asked to film a bio segment for ESPN. She had a great time and we’re just hoping she’ll make it to those rounds on Thursday so her bio will air. : )

Today, we’re doing last minute studying before Hannah takes the written test at 3:30pm. After the written test, she has another filming with ABC down in the Hyatt lobby. A producer called us this morning and wants to film Matthew handing off the “spelling suitcase” to Hannah. Last year, ABC filmed Matthew coming into the hotel with his suitcase full of spelling binders and study resources. They found out that we brought it again this year and want to film the two of them with the suitcase full of words! Should be fun! After the filming, Hannah has an interview scheduled with the Washington correspondent for the Albuquerque Journal, so another article should be in the paper soon. Another speller’s dad just told me that Matthew & Hannah are in an AP article that just hit the newswire this morning. Below is the schedule for the television coverage of the next few days. We know it’s a long shot for Hannah to make the ESPN rounds on Thursday, but we also know that anything is possible with God. : ) We really appreciate everyone’s prayers as she competes – especially for the written test this afternoon – it’s very tough! There are two oral rounds tomorrow and the second one, round three, will be broadcast live on the internet on ESPN360.com. At about 6:30pm Wednesday evening, they will announce the top 50 scorers that will advance to the ESPN rounds on Thursday. IF Hannah makes it, I’ll try to send out another quick note to everyone.

Hannah took the written test this afternoon and is unsure how well she did. It’s always really tough, but whether you advance depends on that score as well as the two oral rounds tomorrow. We’re hoping for the best, but realize that there’s a good chance she won’t make the top 50. Please be praying for her tomorrow as she tackles her words in the two oral rounds. It would be great if she could at least get those two words correct! : ) We’ll keep you posted!

I am so very thankful for my wife Sharon. In getting away this weekend, I realized we need to do that more often. My prayer is that you got to spend time with family and honor those who have given their life for our Country and those who still serve. Did you fly the flag?

From Self to God

In Word
A consistent theme of the New Testament is that we have been bought. Paul tells it to the Corinthians twice, in two different contexts (1 Corinthians 6:20 and 7:23). Paul calls himself a servant, a bondservant or a slave of Christ in nearly every epistle that he wrote. Both Peter and Paul tell us that the church and individual believers are a possession of God (Titus 2:14 and 1 Peter 2:9). Regardless of whether the context is personal freedom, sexual morality, life in the fellowship of believers, or anything else, we are not our own. We belong to Another.

When that really sinks into a believer’s heart, it is a profound revelation. A living sacrifice—in other words, a true worshiper—does not claim his own rights. He does not complain about slights and grievances, because he knows that his Master has ordained them and may even be using them for marvelous purposes. He bypasses the world and its desires. He throws his own personal agenda in the trash, no matter how many goals and dreams and preferences are on it. He does not make out his own schedule, he does not consider any possession his own, he does not make decisions from human reasoning, and he does not maintain any self-interest in his relationships with other people. He disregards the cultural warnings that too much selflessness is unhealthy, because his health is not the issue. God alone is the issue. His will, His character, his plans, and His providence are paramount.

In Deed
We know better than to assume any of us have lived up to that ideal. But it’s still the goal, isn’t it? A heart that truly worships another is a heart that has completely abandoned itself.

Most of the stresses of life come from threats to our self-interest. But if we have no self-interest, where is the stress? The heart that has abandoned itself to God is at rest. It has learned to love the eternal over the world. It lives in peace forever.

Self is the opaque veil that hides the face of God from us.

Sharon and I got away this weekend to Chama and had a wonderful stay at the RiverBend Lodge and a fantastic meal at High Country. Shea has the best steaks!

We got back on Monday and out our display of American Flags in honor of those who have given their life for our Country and for those serving now. Did you fly the flag?

That is about all I have for us this morning, I am trying to learn to shut off my radio world when we go away….I am learning that I have to get away and also Sharon deserves time away from the radio world, as she sacrifices much with my work hours. I am going to try to be a better husband to Sharon and take the weekends off from emails and phone calls. That is hard for me as I love to be of service to all. So please if I do not respond to your call or email on the weekends, please understand. This weekend went by to fast for us. Does this fit what I am talking about or what?

Thanks for sharing Dave…….Thank you for your prayers for Sharon and I.Our prayers were answered for a safe trip. Lars and his friends attended the concert in Denver and will leave for home today around noon. Please keep him in your prayers.

It made me sad yesterday when I was watching Baseball on ESPN……they honored our Military but called their salute, One Nation,One people or something like that..maybe it was One Nation One Purpose…….Do you remember? All I know is that I wish it had been, One Nation under God………But baseball has chased God out like many have and it has been struck by steroids. How sad is that!!! Baseball looks up to players like Alex Rodriguez and his performance was drug induced! But yet baseball acts like nothing and hides. All players who cheated should be thrown out! Look at the players like Hall-0f-Famer’s Ted Williams, Bob Feller who fought for our Country in WWII, the real heroes of Baseball…….unlike a lot of the players today who are so out of touch with reality! If Shoeless Joe Jackson remains banned from the Hall-Of-Fame because he could not read and supposedly took part in the Black Sox Scandal…….players like A-ROD, Barry Bonds should also be banned. One more thing.baseball, (Many of you know I have been a die-hard Baseball fan all my life, so it is hard to write this!) Yesterday as ESPN branded itself as All-American, family, Baseball, etc…..it ran spots for raunchy tv shows! End of rant! I pray that not only Baseball, but Football and all professional Sports clean up their act. So many of our young people get their model of life from pro sports.

Dear KKIM Family,

This Weekend we remember all those who have died serving our Country. Back home my Dad, A World War II Vet, Marine SGT, would also put flowers on all the graves of the Fireman who had passed away. After my Dad returned from the War he became a Fireman in Windom, Minn. my hometown. We also would put flowers on the graves of loved ones who had gone home to be with the Lord. My family still does that to this day. It is a wonderful tradition of love and respect. I also remember Roger Carey of Windom who worked for my Dad at the School and in 1966 Roger enlisted in the Vietnam War as a U.S. Marine (A Marine like my Dad) and was killed in action just 6 months into his enlistment. Roger used to give me rides on his little red Honda motorcycle. Let us remember all the Roger’s this weekend. Roger did what many have, serve our Country in Honor and Death.

Here is a Special Memorial Day Message from Pastor Leonard Navarre Of Valley View Christian Church in Edgewood, NM

Memorial Day is Monday. In Hebrews 11 and verse 4 we read about Abel. It says by faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain” and as the verse concludes it says, “and through faith though he is dead he still speaks.”

As I looked at the brick among many bricks in this World War II memorial the name on the brick would not mean much to you. Under the name were these words…Pacific, Okinawa and China. But this brick means a lot to me. For you see the name on the brick is my Dad’s. John W. Navarre. He served during World War II. He died 7 years ago. When I stand and look at this memorial brick…I remember.

Here’s a poem from a man named John Lyttle on this Memorial Day weekend to encourage us TO NEVER FORGET BUT TO REMEMBER:

The key to understanding the question that John is asking is found in the entire passage from John 14 and 15. In fact, the discourse starts in John 14 where Jesus says, “
Joh 14:23

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
Joh 14:24

“He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
Joh 14:25

“These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you.
Dewey, It was Jesus’ presence with them that spoke of His abiding with them. It is our presence with HIM that keeps us abiding in Him. How do we that? By accepting Him as our Lord and Savior and allowing Him to give unto us His Holy Spirit which was promised by our Lord Jesus.

Joh 14:26

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said.”
We also abide in Him by keeping His commandments. So you see we abide in Him by obeying His word and He abides in us through His Holy Spirit and by allowing His words to dwell, be present, remain in us.

Joh 15:10

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
So, Dewey, the answer to John’s question is: we abide in Him by keeping His teaching and commandments. He abides in us through His Word and through His Spirit. Reading the discourse from John 14:1 through 15:27 helps us understand this abiding.

What a wonderful day Dewey. Starting off with wonderful scriptures from the Cup.

I’ve been reading 1Timothy 2: 1, EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers,intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men. 2. For kings, and for all that are in authority: that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

But after reading that scripture I wondered why the EXHORT was in Capital letters. So being the curious person I am, I looked up the word, Exhort. “To request earnestly”.
And was blessed again. It is soo wonderful to have living words at our finger tips. There for the blessings. All we have to do is pick up the bible. Just as we did when we first saw the light. All we had to do was ask. sam

And what a Biblical pattern we have going here……..

Dear Dewey,

I was listening to Charles Stanley the other morning on KKIM and he recommended reading all 6 verses in Psalm 1 every day for 7 days…Reading and meditating over them twice a day for 7 days.
He challenged us to read Psalm 1 like this to change our life and even to take notes as we study it.

I took him up on it! And plan on continuing as he encouraged even beyond the 7 days for a full 21 days. He said, “I don’t know why 21 days,” but I recommended this life changing commitment to read 6 little verses…

At first, I read it as I already knew what I was reading…common sense in God, with no specific rules, but within the 2nd day, I began to see something deeper;
a deeper understanding of how to continue to live in God’s peace.

Things come up every day that challenge our emotions and by meditating on God’s Word every day, it is like keeping it fresh in my heart.

Is there something that you have done that made no logical sense to you personally, but yet is seemed like the right thing to do?

Recently I did something that felt good to my heart in my Mary Kay business, but it made no logical sense for my business, or for my sister in law, who is my recruiter in Mary Kay…(she is family)
…but it was the right thing to do for this stranger…

Hindsight, I thought of several different ways that I could have helped this lady, and built my business up at the same time…
Hindsight, I questioned my quick decision from the heart…until the next morning!

The next morning, I realized something greater in God in what I had done…I had referred her to an awesome Christian lady that I had met when I was working on advertising my new name in this business.
I am a Christian too, but God just wanted me to do the little step…God always has a bigger plan that we don’t need to question or understand.

The next morning, I was telling Robert, my husband, about what I had done and told him about my ‘revelation’ that morning as I was also telling him about reading Psalm 1.
Robert said, “Karen, when you live your life good and always put other people ahead of you, then God is going to bless you.”

…and that is how I as feeling…I was blessed just by peace…but beyond that, in testimony and encouragement, we always prosper from God when we do the right thing. Rob said, “if I was working in the field and the neighbor stopped by and asked me to help him, then I am supposed to stop what I am doing and go and help him.”

I was, and am still, so blessed by my husband’s wise words of God’s law that I just wanted to share that with you today! I hope that you are blessed as well!
And I am so blessed by reading Psalm 1 that I encourage you as well.

Living in God’s law is so good for the soul! It’s not that complicated…And God looks at and knows our hearts. God will bless us unimaginably when we delight in the law of the LORD.

So, just to share, in case you missed Dr. Stanley and also to give you Psalm 1 to make it handy:

Psalm 1
1″Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel
of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.

2But his delight is in the law of the
LORD,
and on his law he meditates day
and night
3He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

4Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment

Read these 6 verses…morning and evening for 7 days. Take notes and meditate on them for understanding.
Dr. Charles Stanley further encouraged to continue daily for 21 days for dramatic changes.

Ask God how to apply Psalm 1 in our life.

I’m almost done with it. All I can tell you is that it’s a riveting story that addresses the whole issue of biblical surrender.

It also addresses some of the hardest questions we as humans and Believer’s have … like, why did God allow Adam and Eve to sin? If God is sovereign, why does he allow Satan to harm his children? Why do the innocent have to suffer? What about the three in one? Who limits us and why? How can we see the glory of God in horrific tragedies? etc, etc, etc …

I had theological questions on some parts at first. But, as hard as it was and is, the Holy Spirit had me put down my academic hat and put on the cloak of His love, understanding and peace!

What a delicious, joyous and thought provoking journey!

Thanks again Dewey for keeping us thirsty for His Word!

Lena Smith, Ph.D., will be my guest on May 23 talking about caring for our elderly family members. We will talk about different care options from staying in the home, home health care, assisted living, moving in with a family member, and nursing facility care. The concerns of caregivers will be addressed along with ways to reduce the stress of caring for an elderly family member. Dr. Smith has 25 years of experience in the field of aging, healthcare, and elder programs. She is an instructor in Gerontology for Webster University and an instructor at UNM. She will be opening a new Alzheimer’s care facility in Albuquerque in 2010. She will discuss the results of her dissertation research on prayer as an intervention for agitation in dementia.
