Dear Family of Jesus,

Saturday was a very special day in our lives as son Greg and Natasha were married. We did a simple but Godly ceremony at Sandia Crest, high above Albuquerque about 10,600 feet above elevation…..I was blessed to officiate at the wedding. They are now in San Diego receiving training in the franchise they just bought in the Denver area that manages inventory for restaurants. Instead of putting money into a ceremony, they are putting it into their future! Please pray for Greg and Natasha as they start this chapter in their life!

Today is the 25th wedding anniversary of Karen and Robb Rowe. When I traveled to Efland, NC to help with the Revival, I witnessed this wonderful couple be a testimony to all what a Godly marriage is. Happy Anniversary Robb and Karen! We love you!

As I shared with Greg and Natasha on Saturday, Marriage was designed by God and is defined by God. Marriage is at the center of God’s purpose for mankind.

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27

God designed marriage as the first social institution.

Companionship in marriage is God’s provision to replace isolation and meet our deep longing for a close, intimate relationship.

This is why I cringe when I hear Politicians speak out in favor of same sex marriage. Just like last night in his debate with Heather Wilson in the race for Senate, Martin Heinrich saying he has no problem with men marrying men and women marrying women.

It is a proven fact that if couples pray together and worship together the chances of a split are lowered very, very much, the chances of discourse go way down, way down!
Couples who mirror God’s image experience oneness in their marriage……..oneness in our Lord, I am experiencing that with Sharon! When a couple is together in our Lord seeking the same thing, there is much peace, the peace only God can give!
Let us pray today for all marriages!!!

Yesterday the Lord had us in many places for him………..

Here is my testimony for this day.Lord have mercy on us all, Let us hear your voice, let us show your love to the World and let us turn over tables over when we have to!

Day started out with Buffy, Reno and I visiting Rick who whose 12 year old doggy had passed away on Friday, then got word from Darlene Fick Quiring in Mt. lake, Minn that Carmen Wolf Bennett who is from my hometown of Windom, Minn is in the VA Hospital in Albuquerque in intensive care with internal bleeding. Was going to go see Carmen at `12:30, Lord said to rest beside Sharon who is sick, rested then the Lord awoke me to go now and see Carmen. On way came upon motorcycle/car wreck. Motorcycle driver a young women down on pavement hit by young lady who is drunk, pray over young lady she is breathing, blinking her eyes for yes and no cannot talk go over to car grab ladies keys place her under Citizen Arrest with assistance from young man who I tell do not let her out of her car. Police/ Fire come and our heroes take over! Then go to see Carmen at VA Hospital, A Dear lady who needs our prayers for this bleeding to stop. Let us make ourselves available to Jesus each day..let HIM direct our path…….Enough with our schedule follow HIS Schedule!You will know HIS Schedule for you with a personal relationship with HIM! AMEN!
Sharon and I want to express our deep sympathy to Linda Cobb of Son Broadcasting, Co-Host of God Answer’s prayer,on the tragic loss of her husband Lynn.Let us surround Linda with the love of Jesus Christ. We love you Linda!

They then leave for California for training in a new business franchise they have purchased in the Colorado and Northern New Mexico area, it is tied in with the Restaurant business. We are thankful for your prayers!

Saturday a Memorial service is set for Ruby Wells at the Open Door Church of God in Los Lunas at 11am. Ruby was a Dear friend of mine and Sharon’s. I will never forget the day after Church on Sunday where I went with her to her home and we talked for hours! We cannot be there but I will be doing a recorded message that Pastor Jim Montoya is going to play back, for God’s Glory Alone!Thanks Pastor Jim for the opportunity to share how Ruby touched my life! AMEN! I will be also putting this recording up on the www.fggam.org web site.

Saturday on Dewey and Friends on KAZQ CH 32 at 6pm Ben Lucero owner of Indigio Mortgage talks about bringing Christ into the work place. Ben also shares a heart touching testimony. Pastor Bill Ruhl who was also at the taping, was so touched by Ben’s testimony. One thing that the Lord has shown me since I started writing the CUP nearly 14 years ago is to help meet the needs of others, showing them the love of Jesus Christ. As God showed me For God’s Glory Alone Ministries, He said…..bring My light to them…..one person at a time. So that call remains on me. I told the folks in Efland, NC at the Revival I am not a hit and run Pastor. You are stuck with me. I can identify what Janice Arnold Jones said last night in the Congressional debate in her closing comments, “I am not flashy”….the same goes for me I am not flashy I am who I am in Jesus Christ. Janice is unique, as she will not promise anything that she feels uncertain about. That was clear in her debate last night with Michelle Grisham Lujan. We should not promise anything we cannot do. Most politicians promise the sky! I believe that is why so many people are discouraged with Politicians because they promise so much and under deliver so much. This happens in the Body of Christ, in the Church at times. It is not of me, but of my God. We lay all of our being on Jesus Christ and His promises. We look at everybody in the eyes and see Jesus Christ. I am not flashy…..but I am crazy for my Jesus! I always have said if I ran for office I would call it the Jesus Party,of course the media would crucify that name! Later on in this post we have a message from Karen Rowe, another strong women of God. Look around men, more and more Women are stepping up to the plate for God. Look at these candidates running for office, look at their individual lives and whether they have bared good fruits and vote for the ones that stand the closest with God and His Word.

This election I have endorsed two people, David Standridge for Family Court Judge, I have known David for nearly 15 years,I know the depth of his heart for God and God’s people and right before I left for the Revival in North Carolina I endorsed Janice Arnold Jones.

I have known Janice for years as a news reporter and Pastor. I have followed her from her days in the Legislature to where she is at now, running for Congress. Her transparency that she has modeled in the legislature is what we need in Washington. Janice understands and wraps her arms around the challenges we face as a state and nation and works to solve the difficult issues. She just does not talk about them, Janice is able to work with both sides of the aisle to bring legislation forward unlike the gridlock we have in Washington, DC, now. Janice knows the pain of our country. She is in touch with people. She will work hard to get our Country back on track. She has what we need in Congress: an understanding of the major issues facing us, the economy, small businesses, families, energy prices, health care. She has a great understanding of foreign affairs unlike her opponent. I pray that Janice is elected. Janice is a candidate that upholds Biblical Principles which we have been praying for. We must send her to Washington.

Thank you so much for your prayers. It is so comforting to know that there are people we can turn to in time of need at any time day or night. Eden is doing well; the surgery to remove the line to her heart that was done last night went well. Today she weighed in at 5 lbs. 15 oz., her intestines are aligned and properly positioned. The final step is that she takes all her feeding by mouth for 48 hours. She is almost there!!!

My testimony continues on the Revival in Orange County North Carolina. I had learned from Kyle Martin that at the close of every Revival he has led, God sends the rain. I shared with Karen and Rob Rowe that it was going to rain at the close of the Revival and that night it began to sprinkle and at daylight there was a down pour of God’s rain, not a shower, but a DOWN POUR over Orange County AMEN!!!!!! God sent the rain to bless the land, to cleanse it after the Revival.
As this week comes to a close we end it where it began in Efland, NC with Karen Rowe…….

The Day after the Revival: Misting Rain, to Pouring Rain, to a Rainbow; and then God formed a Cat  with a smiling face and a giant heart … Here is my story:

The morning after the Revival I went outside to thank God about 7:30 am. The Sky was glowing Red! Even the white clouds were glowing with a red hue; and the sky was magnificent in an uprising blue sky that somehow was glowing red at the same time!

I looked up to the Heavens and sang “THANK … YOU … LORD; …. THANK … YOU … LORD …” to our Father in Heaven for all God IS and all He has done and had done to carry us through this Hope in Today Revival!

Rain was misting on my face from this glorious and glory filled sky; Peace filled my soul full in a heavenly way; that no words can compare!

Later that same day, when I was taking Pastor Dewey back to the airport, it was pouring the rain with a peace that transcends all understanding as the sky was raining a heavenly rain blessing the land around us! God was blessing the land the day after the Revival which was held in God’s name in honor of His Son! The Holy Spirit was present for God’s glory alone!

Later that evening as I was unloading the truck …still the day after the Revival, the sky was still magnificent and the Spirit in me told me to look for a Rainbow to appear!

I looked up and a rainbow immediately began to appear from behind the many dark clouds!

Before I could speak, a full vibrant Rainbow filled with God’s grace seemed to celebrate God’s glory over our property from one end to the other; … and then I looked, and a double rainbow had formed!

As for me, I believe! A double Rainbow appeared from Heaven above and was Heaven sent, because God does these things!

After the rainbows faded, the sky began to change even more rapidly into the most amazing colors and depths of blue that I’ve ever seen! The depths of transcending blue and the brilliance of the white clouds glowing in a brilliance of light from up above! At the same time to another direction the fiery red sky appeared yet once again to the West!

Just then, we looked and a cloud formed a face of a cat hovering over our house! I know funny; I thought why would God make a cat face appear over my home? LOL But, yet, I believed; and I believe God has purpose in all that He does and I believe that God celebrated the day after the Revival with smiles! This cloud had 2 perfectly shaped cat ears, even up to a point; two eyes, a nose, whiskers and a smile!
Then we looked back to the sky and this cat had a giant heart form in perfect shape right in the middle of its chest!

I smiled; and found it funny that God formed a cat face over our house, until last night! I understood God’s blessing in that cat! For one, God has humor, but you see, Daniel had prayed for a cat and the next day he found 2 tiny kittens. Chris come up with the names “Faith and Hope” because he said, “When you first find faith, then you know you will find hope” and then they did…they found the 2nd kitten “HOPE”!

The 3rd kitten we never caught, but the kids saw it was white. We named it love, because you don’t have to see love to know that love exists and God is Love; White is a pure color and God’s love is Pure and Perfect!

God was showing me His love! And God was pleased with this Hope in Today Revival!

This is me telling my story, in spite of some who may think I am crazy, but I know God is with me, because of the peace He brings me that money can’t buy!

God showed me after the first night of the Revival that the Revival was a “success” … The Revelation come to me: “How do you spell Success?”
“The answer: “Proverbs 16:3Amplified Bible (AMP)
3 Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will
cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed.”

Good Morining Dewey! This is a wonderful devotional that talks about the classic movie Wizard of Oz and the book of Exodus in the Old Testament. I thought of you on the yellow brick road when I read it. Enjoy!

I was just back in Windom to see my folks. I love hearing the bells chime and the colorful fall leaves were beautiful! I went to visit Marilyn and Jack Kelly….what a treat! They are such awesome people. We were so blessed to grow up in that little town!

October l9, 20l2 Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh, My! Gwen Smith Today’s Truth I love you, O Lord, my strength. – (Psalm 18:1, ESV) Friend to Friend I will never forget how the movie The Wizard of Oz lingered in my heart for days after I first saw it. I was just a child like the heroine Dorothy who won me over the instant she sang the dreamy lines of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I was deeply moved by the story of this young girl who had been caught up by a complicated dog matter and a whirling tornado that transported her to a strange land far, far away. While watching the adventure play out on our humble television set, I joined the story in my imagination. I cheered for Dorothy as she came to the defense of her spirited puppy, Toto, when a mean, witchy woman wanted to have him killed. I sank deep into the couch cushions and trembled with fear when the black and white farmhouse was lifted in a storm then fell crashing down in an unfamiliar place of Technicolor. Along the yellow brick road, I made friends when Dorothy made friends. Never again would I look at a scarecrow, a lion or a tin can the same way! I shared in her longing for a safe return home to her Auntie Em and their farm in Kansas. My heart-hopes soared with hers as Dorothy was told that there was a powerful man in the Emerald City who could help her: the Wizard of Oz! As with any good story, there were scary struggles and frustrating setbacks. Flying monkeys captured her… a wicked witch tried to destroy her… but even still, determined Dorothy continued on the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City because her hope was there. Her hopes were placed in the powers possessed by the famed Wizard of Oz. Sadly, after all the ups and down they went through, Dorothy and her friends found out that the wizard was, in fact, powerless. Powerless! What a stinkin’ disappointment! Dorothy was crushed. Her buddies were crushed. I was crushed. How in the world could this happen? Hope had skipped along side of them the entire journey down the yellow brick road. How could anticipated strength possibly fade to weakness? Alas, it did. Hearts were heavy with ache. All seemed lost as Dorothy and her companions confronted their disappointments. Then a surprising shimmer of hope broke through when it was revealed that Dorothy actually possessed the power that she needed to get home. She had the power all along. Her ruby red slippers were the key! Woohoo! Let me just say – at this point – happy dances were thrown down both on the screen and in my living room. Tears fell as goodbyes and hugs were shared. Then Dorothy grabbed Toto and made her way home by calling on the power that had been with her all along. Within seconds, they found themselves somewhere over the rainbow of a dream: home. Safe and sound. To this day, that story still moves me. I can relate to Dorothy on so many levels. She was a girl with a dream and a song in her heart. An average, ordinary girl who had to deal with complicated people and sort through difficult circumstances. A girl who knew what it was to place her hope in other people and be disappointed. A girl who finally came upon the strength she needed to find her way home. Isn’t that all of us? Aren’t we continually looking for the strength we need to bring our hopes into reality? Moses was a man who faced complicated challenges and whirling storms of circumstances too. Born in a time when he, as a Hebrew baby, was supposed to have been killed, Moses was saved by God’s sovereign grace when Pharaoh’s daughter pulled him from the Nile and kept him as her own. A Hebrew among Egyptians, Moses was raised in a land and culture that was far, far removed from his heritage and from the One true God of Israel. As far as black and white is from Technicolor. You know this story! We saw it on the flannel graph boards in Sunday school as little girls. We watched Charlton Heston acted it out on the movie “The Ten Commandments.” Moses had it all in the palace – lost it all when he murdered an Egyptian soldier – then, eventually, risked it all for the holy God who called out to him and commissioned him from a flame. (Need a refresher course on the details? Go read the book of Exodus. It’s completely amazing.) Moses set out to free his people in the power of God. Though the Pharaoh doubted God’s strength, the Lord displayed His might, plague after plague, until finally it looked like Pharaoh got the memo. He let God’s people go. Moses’s yellow brick road of rescue led him and the Israelites out of Egypt and into a dry and dreary desert. (Say that ten times fast!) As they ran away from Pharaoh’s army, the Israelites ran smack dab into a seemingly insurmountable obstacle: the Red Sea. Major problem. Not one to be hindered by impossibility, the LORD took care of business in a huge and powerful way as He parted and held back the Red Sea for Moses and the Israelites so they could escape destruction and experience deliverance. After His people crossed over safely, God made another strength statement by sweeping the Pharaoh and his army into the sea, killing every last one of them. (Exodus 13 and 14) My goodness. What a story! What. A. God! Girl – if this doesn’t get you excited about the strength of God, I’m not quite sure what will! “Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.” (Exodus 14:31) Then a big ole’ party went down as Moses and the Israelites sang to the LORD a song that’s commonly referred to as the Song of Moses. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.(Exodus 15:2) In Exodus 15, Moses calls God his Strength and celebrates the power that brought salvation to his people. Oz is the Hebrew word for strength. How about that!? El Sali, is a Hebrew name for God of my Strength; God my Rock. King David also calls God his Strength in Psalm 59:9, O my Strength, I will watch for you, for you, O God, are my fortress. Then again in verse 17, O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.(Psalm 59:17) You might be struggling with this… wondering where the strength of God is in your story. Maybe things are good for you right now, but you know of others who are in shady places along their yellow brick roads. Each of us is guaranteed life challenges, but God promises to be our strength when we call on Him. He is not a puffed up and powerless wizard of Oz hiding behind a curtain, pulling strings. He is the God of Oz – El Sali –the God of Strength who loves you and longs to move in and through your life. Will you trust Him deeper today and allow His joy to be your strength? Let’s Pray Dear Lord, my Strength, El Sali, You are powerful and loving. Thank you for allowing me – this average, ordinary girl with complicated relationships and difficult circumstances – to have access to your perfect Strength when I am weak. Help me to trust you when all my heart sees are lions and tigers and bears. In Jesus’s name, amen. Now It’s Your Turn Read the first half of Psalm 84:5. Blessed are those whose strength is in you.Who is this comment directed to? In what ways has this been true in your life? Nehemiah 8:10 says, “…the joy of the Lord is your strength.” What do you think the joy of the Lord looks like? Have you seen it lately? If so, in whom?

We are getting asked a lot about what services we offer here at FGGAM! PRAISE GOD! Yesterday we began to help a couple find housing and work. Just finished Henri Nouwen’s wonderful book, In the Name of Jesus. It’s Nouwen’s reflections on Christian leadership. One passage struck me: “The leaders of the future will be those who dare to claim their irrelevance in the contemporary world as a divine vocation that allows them to enter into a deep solidarity with the anguish underlying all the glitter of success, and to bring the light of Jesus there.”

Darlene Fick Quiring:
God is much like that mother eagle, that takes away the comfort of the nest, so the baby eagle will be forced to jump “by faith” into it’s destiny… pay attention to discomfort, it is God sending you to the next level!!!!

Dear Dewey,

I printed some of the Cup today, but haven’t found time to read the part about what it means to have a revival yet. I wanted to write to you first before I read to see how my experience matches up. As I have been resting and recuperating from a lack of sleep and catching up on work from all the preparations to have the revival, I found my written goals that I had written for this Hope in Today Revival; and I am happy to report that they were met. Praise God!

And I just realized as a friend asked me how the Revival was…

The Revival to me is just what that word said, I was revived in my Spirit to feel alive on the inside in such a powerful and beautiful way! Full of peace, joy and Rejoicing with the Breath of God breathing on the inside of me is how I would describe what the Revival was to me. No words to describe really, but rather to report that it was the authentic Holy Spirit of God that Revived me; and I am still full and forever changed, because of a newness that I have found that is worthy of seeking!

The common fellowship and unity in an open mind to just simply allow the Holy Spirit to have His way with the services was a heaven sent experience!

Going through the Revival was powerful and strengthening, and now as I am resting, I feel renewed in my spirit by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Anyway, this is just a simple expression of what Revival now means to me.

And I believe that the expectations of many coming to Jesus at a Revival is because of happy people in Christ enjoying the freedom in living for Christ!

I believe that many will still come to Christ because of the Revival of the Spirit in the ones who are still a part of this Revival, even Today as it still continues on … It has begun and now we live Revived in the Holy Spirit in service.

During the winter of 1940 Josephine Kuntz’ husband, a house painter and textile worker, was temporarily unemployed because of the weather and a seasonal lay-off. It was a difficult time for the family. They literally had no money. Their eighteen month old daughter, Rachel, was recovering from pneumonia and wasn’t doing well. The doctor insisted Rachel eat a boiled egg each day, but even that was beyond their means.
“Why not pray for an egg?” suggested a young friend. They were a church-going family, but the idea of actually praying for their needs was something they had never really considered. Josephine wasted no time. On her knees she prayed that God would provide an egg each morning for her daughter.
Later that morning Josephine heard some cackling coming from the hedge fence in front of their home. Among the bare branches sat a fat red hen. (This is a true story.) She had never seen this hen before and had no idea where it came from. She just watched in amazement as the hen laid an egg and then proceeded down the road. In a moment the hen was gone but an egg sat in her yard.
What do you do under such circumstances but thank God? The next day Josephine was startled once again to hear cackling in the hedge. The red hen came by every day for over a week and repeated this routine. Each day little Rachel had a fresh boiled egg. The little girl got better, the weather improved, and Josephine’s husband went back to work. “The next morning I waited by the window and watched,” Josephine says, but the red hen did not return. God takes care of His people, and though we don’t always see it in such striking and noticeable ways, the Bible promises that He will take care of those who are His.
There is a beautifully graphic description of God’s care for Israel over in the 32nd chapter of Deuteronomy 32: 9-14. “For the LORD’S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance. [Jacob here, is Israel. He is talking about the nation that came from this one man.] 10 “He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil of His eye. [God came to the Israelites while they were in captivity in Egypt.] 11 “Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions. [God stirred them up and taught them to fly in freedom as opposed to the the slavery they had known for over 400 years.] 12 “The LORD alone guided him, and there was no foreign god with him. 13 “He made him ride on the high places of the earth, and he ate the produce of the field; and He made him suck honey from the rock, and oil from the flinty rock, [After God brought Israel out of Egypt, he blessed them and gave them the land of Canaan, a land “flowing with milk and honey.”] 14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock, with fat of lambs, and rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the finest of the wheat– and of the blood of grapes you drank wine.”
The passage goes on to say that, in spite of all God did for Israel, they ultimately turned away from Him and turned to idols.
Verse 11, the statement that pictures God’s care being like to the eagle caring for her young.
11 “Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions.”
What a beautiful picture of how God deals with his people! A mother eagle training her young to fly. In the same way the eagle deals with her young, God dealt with Israel and deals with us today. There are at least seven stages that a young eagle goes through when learning to fly. These stages are also evident in God’s “training” us to live the life of faith. That is the basis of the comparison.
The Seven stages are: (1) Demonstration, (2) Discomfort, (3) Danger, (4) Decision, (5) Direction Change, (6) Doing (7) Deliverance.
1. The Demonstration Stage
As the time draws near for a young eagle to begin flight training, to the mother eagle will frequently push off from the perch where the nest is and hover above her young. In response, the eaglets begin to flap their wings wildly in imitation. It’s as natural and instinctive for them as breathing.
That is what verse 11 is referring to when it says the eagle “hovers” over its young. At this stage the eaglets don’t have enough feathers to fly, but they begin to develop their wing muscles. The key word here is demonstration. The eagle demonstrates flying for her young and they imitate her in response.
What a great picture to describe what God has done for us through Jesus! Jesus came to earth as Immanuel, “God with us,” the Bible says. He demonstrated the kind of faith and life we should be leading.
We read in Romans 5:8 that “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
In 1 Timothy 1:16 we read, “And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.”
God hasn’t left us to figure things out on our own. He has cared enough about us to give us a living demonstration. Remember when Jesus said, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father”? Jesus was and is the perfect and indispensable demonstration of how we should live the life of faith.
You know, among churches of Christ in the past, we’ve spent a lot of time in Acts and the Epistles learning about the structure of the church. I wonder, though, if we’ve spent as much time as we should in the gospels, getting to know Jesus? Do we put forth as much effort in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, as we do in Acts?
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:8, “Remember Jesus…” We must not forget the One who is the embodiment and demonstration of all we are called to be!
The next stage in the training of young eagles, and God training us. In verse 11, it says, “Like an eagle that stirs up its nest…”
It’s one thing for those young eagles to flap their wings in the security of their down-filled home. It’s quite another for them to move to the edge, look over, and imagine stepping out on nothing! Naturally, they don’t want to do it. So the adult eagle does something the young eagles won’t understand until later. She begins “stirring up” the nest! She actually begins to poke through the bottom and tear the nest apart. The young eagles are literally forced to fly.
What often happens to us at this stage of God’s teaching the faith-life is that we begin to be bothered about something. We recognize that something isn’t right. We begin to get a little worried, a little anxious. There is a growing uneasiness in us. Something is out of whack and we don’t quite know what it is, or if we do, we are ignoring it. Like Job in Job 30:27, we might say, “My heart is troubled and restless…”
It can be about anything that is bothering us. A relationship. An unfulfilled dream. A stress in our lives. A fear. A weakness. An indulgence. We find ourselves thinking, “One of these days I’m going to have to start working on that.” The trouble is, like the eaglet is reluctant to get too close the edge of the nest, we, too, are reluctant to move out of our comfort zone and face whatever it is.
This is God stirring up our nest. He’s getting us ready for change. He wants us to face something we’ve not faced before, so He makes us uncomfortable. Do some of you know what I mean?
Perhaps He wants us to face our neglected finances. Maybe it is a relationship he wants us to mend or maybe even one He wants us to break off. Whatever the case, there is a growing discomfort and uneasiness in us that is hard to ignore.
You know, the sad thing is that some people live their entire lives in this stage. They cling to their nest like terrified eagle chicks, afraid to do anything about their problem. They’d rather live with discomfort than risk flying. “At least the discomfort is predictable,” they think. “If I were to change, who knows what might happen?”
When we find ourselves stalled at the discomfort stage, we might understand why God brings us to the next stage of our learning.
3. The Danger Stage
Eventually, in the case of eagles, the mother eagle gets all the kids out of the nest. We know that for sure. Have you ever seen a full grown eagle still perched in the nest of its parents, peeping like a baby for them to bring him something to eat? No, you haven’t, because one way or the other, he gets booted out of the nest with nothing between he and the hard ground but air. He either learns to fly or falls to his death. Eagles weren’t meant to be nest-sitters. They were meant to fly! This danger stage isn’t mentioned directly in verse 11, but it is certainly implied.
Now, what does that say to us? What I think it says is that God often allows a danger or a crisis to come into our lives that moves the issue we’re ignoring off the back burner. He sends us a wake up call. All of a sudden the pain gets so bad we can’t ignore it anymore. Suddenly we get fired or we have an accident or a serious illness. Perhaps a spouse threatens to walk out or a creditor starts foreclosure. Like the eagle’s nest, the bottom falls out from under our lives and we realize we’ve got to do something – fast!
It has probably happened to all of us. It happened to King David. In Psalm 119:67, it says, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Thy word.” It took a crisis of affliction to show David the need to learn to keep God’s word.
If you are in a crisis right now or have had one recently, could this be the reason? Is there something you’ve been ignoring?
Remember, God wants you to fly, not flutter in the nest. He wants you to grow up!
Well, the danger stage quickly moves us on to the next stage in our training, whether we like it or not.
4. The Decision Stage
The nature of danger or a crisis is that it forces us off the fence or, to use our analogy, out of the nest. We have to decide, “Am I going to move ahead or am I going to retreat? Am I going to face this or try to run away?
With the nest suddenly gone out from under him and the ground coming up fast, the young eagle has a choice to make. He realizes, “I’ve gotta do something – Now!” So he chooses to fly or fall – to soar or smash on the rocks below – literally, to live or die.
God often forces us to that place, have you noticed? Especially if we are reluctant to grow or pay attention to the need to grow.
If you are ignoring what you know is right, whether you are a Christian or not, what is it going to take to get you to come to a decision?
Is God dealing with you right now? Is this the issue? Is it your stubbornness or neglect? When will you decide?
The next stage is so close to the decision stage that I was tempted to put them both under the same heading, but there is a difference.
5. The Direction Change Stage
The young eagle, falling fast, has decided he must do something. What is it? He must change direction! He must start going up instead of down.
When we’re talking about our response to God’s dealing with us, the decision stage and the direction change stage are called repentance.
Repentance is a decision to turn away from evil and turn back to God. It takes place in the mind. In that way it is a decision, but since it is a decision to change, there will soon be a direction change that results.
Sometimes we are reluctant to change direction. Often it is because we haven’t really made a decision to change. Oh, we were sorry things were the way they were. We even cried some real tears over it. But we never really turned loose. We never really changed our minds.
Often Christians struggle with sin. They are sorry for the struggle. They don’t like the prospect of the consequences. They might even come forward in church and let the whole church know. But there is no direction change as a result.
Paul warned us in 2 Corinthians 7:10, “For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
According to that verse, you can have two people side by side who are sorry about their sins. Looking at them, they both look like candidates for eternal life. Yet, one of them goes to heaven, the other goes to hell. The difference? One of them had a sorrow that produced repentance – a change of direction. The other was just sorry. There was no repentance.
What are we talking about? We’re talking about God teaching us to fly – to live the faith life in a way that is pleasing to Him and brings us to maturity. He uses these stages to do it: Demonstration, Discomfort, Danger, Decision, Direction Change.
There are still two more stages before we will be competent fliers.
6. The Doing Stage
The adult eagle can teach her young to fly but she cannot fly for them. They must do it. Have you ever seen two adult eagles flying piggy-back? Neither have I. It doesn’t happen. Flying takes effort on the part of each individual.
The Bible says in Galatians 6:5, “Each on shall bear his own load…” In the realm of our learning to walk the Christian walk, we must put forth effort. The very common “do nothing” religion around us is false. It is an aberration of the devil. It is a cheap substitute for the faith of the Bible.
Does this mean that we get to heaven on our own merits? Not at all! But God wants us to learn to fly.
Consider this: God often gave his blessings in Scripture while the recipients of the blessings were in the midst of obedience.
Remember when Israel crossed the Red Sea? Moses said “Move forward!” The people obeyed. Then when the feet of the priests touched the water, it divided.
When they crossed the Jordan on their way to the Promised land it was the same way. They moved forward, put their feet in the water, and it divided.
When Jesus cleansed the ten lepers, he told them to go present themselves to the priest. Then, “as they were going, they were cleansed.” (Luke 17:14)
The eagle learns to fly by striving against the gravity that is pulling him down – in short, by flying.
This sixth step of doing is critical to the young eagle’s learning to fly and it is critical to our growing up in Christ. We need to get with it when it comes to doing right. It is also critical to the final step.
7. The Deliverance Stage
This one is beautiful and it’s right in the text. Look again at verse 11: “He spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions.”
I am told that the adult eagle will actually swoop down and catch her falling offspring on her back and carry them back up to the home perch. What a beautiful picture of what God does for us!
Paul told young Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:11, “What persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord delivered me!”
In Psalm 34:19 we read, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”
In 2 Peter 2:9, the Apostle tells us, “The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation…”
You see, God doesn’t leave us to do it on our own. It’s just that we must be about the doing in order for the deliverance to come. The promise of deliverance is there. We must believe it and move ahead. We must be striving to fly even if we can’t quite do it yet.
Conclusion
Is God teaching you how to fly? If you are a Christian, there is no doubt about it! How is your personal “flight school” going? Are you cooperating or copping out?
Have you seen any or all of these stages of God’s flight school in your life? You can be sure they are there now or will be there soon.
What is your attitude toward them? Are you focused on the goal of being able to go “solo” or are you clinging to the comfort of the nest? Be sure that God will stir it up if you are reluctant.
And maybe, just maybe, you’ve wondered what is going on in the midst of all this. Maybe you’ve had some rough times recently and haven’t been able to figure out why. Perhaps now you have your answer.
Be sure of these things:

	God does want you to learn to fly.
	He will put you through flight school.
	You can ignore it, but it won’t stop the process.
	You can resist it, but it won’t stop the process.
