I just want to thank you personally for contacting Rodney Washington and his wife during their time of need. That contact obviously had a profound impact. I personally vouch for the Washington family and Gary (brother) as to their genuine love for Christ. God blessed me beyond measure when I I had the distinctive pleasure to coach these individuals in high school wrestling in Louisiana in the early 80’s. My heart bleeds so hard for them. I just want you to know what wonderful people they are and how much they mean to me. Again, Dewey thank you for your message and what you as a person mean to so many.

I just wanted to give you a little update on my Sister, Gina Heise . Gina was released from the hospital last Thursday and has been home recovering. My other Sister, Laura Smith, arrived from Michigan Friday afternoon to help out for a week or two. This will greatly ease the burden on my Mother, Joanne Jelso, and allow her some time to rest and recoup, as well. Gina is still in pain. But, she knows things will improve and the pain will subside. Gina is ready to work on her recovery. She knows how important it is that she follows doctor orders and that physical therapy is the key. Gina is very aware of all the prayers and extends her gratitude to all who have prayed for her and I do as well. I think we all know how powerful prayer is, especially when it comes to our prayers for others.

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a
glass of water and asked, “how heavy is this glass of water?” Answers
called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, “The absolute
weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.”
“If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an
hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll
have to call an ambulance. “In each case, it’s the same weight, but the
longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”
He continued, “And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we
carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes
increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.” “As with the glass of
water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it
again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.”
“So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t
carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re
carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can.” “Relax; pick them
up later after you’ve rested. Life is short. Enjoy it!
And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life:
* Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue.
* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
* Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
* Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
* If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
* Never buy a car you can’t push.
* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.
* Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.
* Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
* The second mouse gets the cheese.
* When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
* You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world
to one person.
* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
* We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty
and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors,

The word used in this parable, in all three accounts (Mt. 13, Mk. 4 and Lk. 8), as well as in a few other parables Jesus spoke, is the Greek word, ‘speiro’ translated “to sow” or “sow seed.” There is another word used in the NT in a similar sense, ‘diaskorpizo’ which means “to scatter”. From this verb comes the word ‘Diaspora’ used for the “scattering of the Jews” (OT) and “scattering of the Christians” (NT) — remember that Peter addressed his first epistle to the “elect who are sojourners of the Dispersion [Diaspora]” (ASV). But in Mt. 25:24 & 26, ‘diaskorpiza’ is used in an agricultural context; the one talent man accused his master of reaping where he had not “scattered.”
Anyway, I said all of that to say that one of the definitions of “broadcast” (verb) is: “to cast or scatter abroad over an area, as seed in sowing.”
Then, note this description of the activity of a 1st century “farmer” or “sower of seed” – “This parable of the sower is a vivid picture of a farmer, sowing wheat from a bag strapped over his shoulder, scattering seed by thrusting his hand into the bag and hurling the seeds in an arc, somewhat in front of him, as he walked through the field.”
Pretty easy to see the connection then to “scattering” or “broadcasting” the seed, don’t you think? And of course, in the parable it is figurative of “scattering” or “broadcasting” the word of God (Mt. 13:19).
Well that was fun. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. 😉 As for the sermon itself, I’m not sure Dewey could make much out of my notes, but of course it was recorded and audio copies are available.

“If you ever really want to do a story about who I am, God’s got to be at the center of it. Every time I hear a piece or read a story that doesn’t have that, they’re missing the whole lesson of who I am.” – Kurt Warner
It has become part of the sports landscape. Athletes congregate on the field after a game to pray or offer a sound bite thanking a higher power.
It rarely makes the news.
Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner understands this. The man who led this organization to its first home playoff game since 1947 knows that discussion about resurrections comes only in the context of career revivals and that tape recorders shut off when faith references start up.
During a visit to The Oprah Winfrey Show, Warner “basically had three sentences to say, so, in the middle one, I made sure I mentioned my faith, because how could they cut it out?” he said. “I went to watch the show on replay . . . and they cut it out!”
Warner, 37, is right. There is dishonesty in telling his story if you ignore what drives him, especially if you accept its role in one of the NFL’s great success stories. In five years, he went from a 22-year-old stock boy at a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, grocery store to Super Bowl MVP. He has morphed again, from unemployed veteran to record-setting starting quarterback with the Cardinals, who on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C., will try to advance to the NFC Championship Game by beating the Carolina Panthers.
“I wasn’t always this way,” he said.
During his final season at the University of Northern Iowa in 1993, Warner went to a country-music dance bar called Wild E. Coyotes. He spotted Brenda Carney Meoni and asked her to dance. Her immediate reaction?
“Get away. Get away,” she thought.
“Here’s this cute guy in a bar with an entourage of females, and I’m the last person that makes sense for him to go to,” Brenda said. “I’m a divorced woman with two kids, one with special needs. And Kurt’s 21. Twenty-one.”
They danced, and the next day, Warner was knocking on her door with a rose.
“Again, I’m screaming in my head, ‘Go away!’ but I opened the door and said, ‘C’mon in,’ ” she said. “My 2 1/2-year-old grabs him by the hand and shows him every radio we own.
“He fell in love with my kids before he fell in love with me. When we’d have a fight and were going to break up, he’d say, ‘Well I get the kids.’ I’m like, ‘But they’re my kids!’ ”
They stuck together, even when it appeared football wasn’t in Warner’s future. He signed with the Green Bay Packers as a free agent in 1994 but was cut before the season began. He returned to UNI to work as a graduate assistant football coach and spent nights stocking shelves at the local Hy-Vee grocery store. He moved in with Brenda, who was struggling financially and turned to food stamps for a while. They drove a car that died every time it turned left.
He landed with the Arena Football League’s Iowa Barnstormers in 1995 and three years later was signed by the St. Louis Rams, who allocated him to the NFL’s developmental league in Europe. His backup with the Amsterdam Admirals was Jake Delhomme, now the Panthers’ quarterback.
Around this time, Warner began challenging Brenda about her faith. She had become a devout Christian as a 12-year-old after seeing a fundamentalist Christian film called A Distant Thunder (1978). Warner questioned her, suggesting she was picking and choosing her beliefs from the Bible at her convenience. During this exploration, he closely studied the Bible.
“When I did, it was obvious what the truth was,” Warner said.
He committed himself to the Bible’s message. That’s Warner’s way, why he has succeeded in football. He studies, commits, believes.
Before they married, he told Brenda they should follow the Bible faithfully, which meant, among other things, no premarital sex.
“I’m like, ‘Dude, we’ve got so many other things to work on. Why that one?’ ” Brenda, now 41, said, laughing.
They married in 1997. In 1999, he took over as the Rams’ quarterback when starter Trent Green was injured. What followed was two Super Bowls, two MVP titles and a legion of Christian followers.
He was both revered and scorned for his outspokenness about faith. Since Warner’s arrival in Arizona in 2005, and the revival of his career, people here treat his religion with more curiosity than debate. Many were amused by Warner giving an invocation one year at Celebrity Fight Night, a popular black-tie fundraiser for Muhammad Ali’s Parkinson Research Center. Ali is of the Muslim faith.
“I never feel like, ‘Should I say this, or do I not,’ but I do try now to strategically figure out (during interviews) how I can get somebody to include it because it’s so important to who I am,” Warner said.
How does Warner express his faith? He always has the Bible in his hand when he does postgame interviews. He joins players in postgame group-prayer sessions on the field. He loves to engage in spiritual discussions with teammates but says he tries not to be in-your-face about it. He wants the words of the Bible to guide his everyday life.
When he and his family dine on the road, they always buy dinner for another table in the restaurant but keep the purchase anonymous. The children choose the family. Brenda Warner said it’s their way of teaching their kids one of the Bible’s messages: It’s not your circumstances that define you but what you do with those circumstances.
Warner shouldn’t be categorized only one way, Delhomme said.
“Football doesn’t define Kurt Warner, and I think that’s the biggest thing to me. It’s not who he is. Kurt Warner is a lot bigger.”
Added Cardinals defensive tackle Bertrand Berry: “To limit Kurt as a Super Bowl champion would do a disservice to him. I think his legacy will be that he’s just a great human being, and I think that’s the highest compliment that you can give anybody.”

My older brother phoned me this morning (Monday) @ a quarter to 5am with the following news:
His son (Ryan) was murdered last night. The police informed him at 1am this morning of
the loss. This was their only child of about 18 years of age. This mother/father combination
is about the most wholesome parents that I have come across in my 43 years of living. The
though of my going to my nephew’s funeral NEVER crossed my mind…even in this day and
age of neglect for life that the late teens-to-early-twenties age group has adopted.
It’s senseless that the responsible party that has caused my nephew to become another statistic
isn’t solely the youth that pulled the trigger’s fault–twenty years ago, the access to firearms wasn’t
as easy or desirable to access as they are now for the younger generation.
This is where the audacity of the US Government/the powers that be blows me away! I won’t
finish that thought.
Not only is this prayer request for my brother and his wife, but for the perception of our youth in
America today–the ‘End Times’.

Ryan would have been 19 next week. I talked to Ryan’s father yesterday, Rodney, and offered our prayers to him and his wife Rochelle. I told him on behalf of all of us here at the KKIM and the CUP that we would do whatever we can for the family and also we could put the family in contact with Pastors and support Ministries. Rodney wanted you all to know that your prayers mean a lot.
We never know when we will get a call like that. It’s the call we never want to get. Later on yesterday Gary sent this……….

Over the 30-plus years of being the senior pastor of Jefferson Baptist Church, I have come to the conclusion that the most basic key to the health of our church is the volume of prayer that is faithfully practiced by individuals in private and with others. Volume of prayer is a missing ingredient in many churches. I recognize that nobody can pray 24 hours a day, and I don’t think that every program in the church ought to be dropped in favor of prayer. But most Christians, if asked, would agree that they should pray more than they do. Most pastors would also agree that their church could pray more.
I believe that, everything else being equal, the more prayer happens in our church, the more God will bless our church. “Much prayer–much blessing, little prayer–little blessing, no prayer–no blessing,” has become the motto of our church.
There are many passages in the Bible that demonstrate the validity of this premise. Jesus’ Himself prayed all night on numerous occasions. His parables, illustrated with “knock and keep on knocking” and “ask and keep on asking”, emphasized the idea of much prayer and of not giving up. In 2 Corinthians 1:11, Paul emphasizes God’s favor coming on the basis of the prayers of “many”: “You also joining in helping us through your prayers, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed upon us through the prayers of many.” In 2 Corinthians 9:6, Paul uses an agricultural law to demonstrate that the more we give to God, the more He gives back. I believe that this principle is not just about giving money: “Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully.”
One of the questions that will come to mind is about “much blessing.” What exactly does that mean? Over the years of encouraging “much prayer” in our church, I have seen the number of blessings grow as the volume of prayer has grown.
One major blessing of increased prayer is increased unity in the church family. I don’t think there is anything more discouraging to people in the church, especially leadership, than disagreements that turn into fights, politics, bitterness, gossip and meanness. Disunity in churches is probably the number one reason that pastors resign from churches, that unchurched people don’t come, and that those in the church leave for another church. God loves unity and will sovereignty bring unchurched people to healthy churches.
Disunity happens between staff members of a church over personality clashes, agenda differences and just plain pride. Disunity can happen between board members or between boards and staff. And disunity happens between good Christian people who have clashes over opinions and agendas in the name of Christ.
Leaders pursue unity when they recognize the debilitating effects of disunity on the health of the church family. But usually it is addressed in church meetings, confrontations, church discipline and other such methods that often create even more disunity. Skill and wisdom in dealing with conflicts is important, but apart from God working in the church, little real unity will result. The prayer of Jesus in John 17:21 illustrates the need for prayer to produce unity: “That they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that You sent Me.” Church leadership needs to encourage, admonish and teach the church to pray all the time for God to “make us one, even as You are one.” The more we pray this prayer, the more God will implement it in our churches. “Much prayer–much unity.”
Another major blessing that God will give to a church that prays “much” is a growing love for one another and for unbelievers. Paul prays for the church in Thessalonica in 1 Thessalonians 3:12. “And may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all men, just as we also do for you.” Love is the big command in the New Testament. Jesus declared that our love for one another would be the major thing that would draw the unbelieving world to our Savior. Paul declared that one of the major goals of his ministry was that those who heard and read the Word would love one anther with a pure heart. The more we pray in a church, the more God will work in the people of the church and cause them to grow in love. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 says that God will cause us to increase and abound in love, not only for each other in the church but also for all men. As our love increases and abounds for all men, our efforts to win them for Christ will increase. Evangelism will become more and more an outflow of a church that loves the world. “Much prayer–much love.”
Another blessing that comes to a church that prays “much” is that the preaching of the pastor will get better and better. I especially like this blessing. It isn’t hard to come to the conclusion in studying the New Testament that preaching is the center of a healthy church. It also isn’t hard to recognize, as a pastor who has preached a lot over the years, that there is bad preaching, average preaching, good preaching and really good preaching. Almost every preacher of the Bible recognizes that God’s anointing on the preacher is critically important for the spoken word to powerfully impact the hearers. The absolute, most important key to anointing in preaching is prayer–not a little prayer, but much prayer. Not just prayer by the preacher, but also prayer on the part of every person who regularly listens to the preacher. “Much prayer–anointed preaching.”
Another major blessing that comes to a church characterized by “much” prayer is that people are more willing to get involved in the ministry of the church and to be a functioning part of the Body of Christ. Jesus saw the problem of few workers, and in Matthew 9:37-38 He encouraged his disciples to pray. “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.’ ”
I am often asked what I believe is a major key to a growing church. I believe that the most important requirement for a church to grow is to have most of those in the church faithfully and effectively functioning in the area of their Spiritual gifts. Paul, I believe, teaches this in Ephesians 4:16: “The whole body, being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” This won’t happen, though, unless there is much prayer. “Much prayer–much serving.”
Another blessing God gives to the church that prays much is that people give their money to the church more sacrificially and joyfully. In our day of economic woes, this is especially important. A characteristic of the church in the Book of Acts was that they prayed much. A major blessing of that prayer was in the generous giving that followed. In Acts 4:24, there was a major congregational prayer meeting called because of the persecution that had come to the church. Four major results are seen almost immediately following that prayer meeting, and one of them was described in Acts 4:34-35: “For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales, and lay them at the apostles’ feet; and they would be distributed to each, as any had need.” As pastors and preachers we often do a lot of preaching, encouraging, and even imploring about giving, but often we don’t pray much about the giving of those in our church. “Much prayer–much giving.”
Another great blessing that comes to praying churches is that God opens up doors to individuals in the church and to the church as a whole to new ministry opportunities. God is the One in charge, and He is the One who gives us responsibility to serve Him. Nobody invents opportunities to serve as much as they accept them as God gives them. There is nothing worse, in my mind, than being a person or church that is “on the bench” instead of “in the game.” The fun thing about God giving the opportunities and opening the door is that He always gives all the resources, wisdom and strength to accomplish what He assigns to us. “Much prayer–much opportunity.”
I have personally identified “Twelve Blessings for Praying Churches.” I have written about just six of them in this article. I personally review those blessings almost every day. It only takes about five minutes to think about each area of blessing and to consider how our church is doing in those areas. The daily practice of this meditation keeps me motivated to pray much and to continually work at leading our church to much prayer.
I am never satisfied with the volume of my personal prayer. I am always trying to discipline myself and my schedule to be able to pray more. I don’t particularly enjoy prayer itself, but I sure do enjoy the blessings that God gives when I do pray. It is so easy to let ministry and life use up my time and to have my prayer time slip back to smaller amounts of time. I pray a lot, not because I am disciplined or godly, but because I truly believe that “much prayer” does result in “much blessing.”
